YoungArts Artist Activation by Nina Osoria Ahmadi

Miami, Florida

Collection of photographs taken during Nina Osoria Ahmadi’s dance workshop: "CHANGO//dance like a boy, dance like a girl.".

This workshop invites participants to explore movement as a language of self-making, inspired by the Yoruba Orisha (diety) Chango. Chango’s complex identity and duality—embodying both masculinity and femininity, strength and sensuality—will guide us as we examine how movement can express and challenge gendered expectations. Music will combine live drumming with live DJing to invoke a sense of both (a) the ancestral movements that guide us as and (b) our contemporary site of free movement, the nightlife scene. Through freestyle movement inspired by Afro-Cuban dance styles like salsa, rumba, and guaguancó, participants will embody Chango’s fluidity as a medium for their own self-expression.
